11th October reminded the world of the International Day of the girl child. It was started by a non-governmental organisation and began as a project of Plan Internationals 'Because I am a Girl campaign'. Plan International representatives in Canada proposed the Canadian Federal government to collaborate with supporters and countries to raise awareness internationally.

United Nations General Assembly supported and step forward to pass a resolution to raise awareness of nurturing girls globally. October 11th 2012 was chosen the inaugural International Day of the girl child. Also addressed as the 'Day of girls' and the 'International Day of the girl'.

This project focuses on the perception of gender inequality faced by girls across the globe. More than 62 million girls around the world have no access to education. It focuses on issues like nutrition, legal rights, access to education, medical care, discrimination, violence against women and forced child marriage.

On October 11, 2016, United Nations women goodwill ambassador Emma Watson urged countries and families worldwide to end child marriage.

There is a theme each year to celebrate this special day all over the world.
In the first in the year, 2012 theme was "ending child marriage"
in 2013 the second was "innovating for girls education"
in 2014 the theme was "empowering adolescent girls"
in 2015 the theme was "the power of adolescent girl Vision for 2030"
in 2016 the theme was "girls progress what accounts for girls"
in 2017 "empower girls: before, during and after crisis"
in 2018 the theme was with her "A skilled Girl force."

The theme for 2019 is "Girl force: Unscripted and Unstoppable" to celebrate the achievements, by and for the girls.
This day commemorates and reflects the success of girls and young women too.

The day is planned and celebrated in several countries by non-governmental organisations and sponsored by the government and the United Nations. Marked as a special day to celebrate the success of young girls soaring high to rise on their wings of dreams to fulfil their human rights.

Apart from government taking steps to support and promote this day, it is our duty as a citizen to help them grow and raise our voice against injustice, curb violence and stop infanticide within our society.
