Here again, we are celebrating the fifth International Day of yoga in India and throughout the world as a global event.

In order to promote yoga and spread awareness. In 2015, United Nations declared June 21st as International Day of yoga by resolution 69/131 on 11th December 2014, recognising its Universal appeal, 

The proposal for the declaration was approved by 177 nations. The date 21st June was suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as this is the longest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere. The theme according to the UN for the year 2019 is 'yoga for climate action'.

So What is yoga?

The word Yoga is derived from Sanskrit root 'Yuj' meaning 'to join' or 'to yoke' meaning to unite'. synchronizing a person's body, mind and consciousness. In olden days in India rishi-munis used to perform the sacred practice of yoga for peace of mind.

About the Logo 

  • The amazing logo for Yoga Day selected by PM Narendra Modi represents all the basic elements that constitute the consciousness.
  • The logo on the white background depicts a pair of hands joined together on the top of the head.
  • The hands joined above symbolizes the individual consciousness showing unison of harmony between the body, mind and the soul with that of the universal consciousness 
  • There are 2 pairs of brown and green leaves that symbolise the elements of earth and nature.
  • The blue human figure represents the element of water and the orange halo above the head depicts the element of fire, which is the source of all energy.
  • A picture of the globe behind the human figure stands for solidarity and oneness.
  • Below the logo, the phrase 'Yoga for harmony and peace' is written.
The first yoga day celebrations was held in India at Rajpath in New Delhi in the year 2015, where PM of India along with 35,985 people and dignitaries from 84 nations performed 21 asanas for 35 minutes. In Hindi, we called it "Antar Rashtriya Yog Divas.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga improves overall health both mental and physical, builds muscle strength perfects your posture, increases your blood flows, boosts your immunity and whatnots.

This year at Prabhat Tara ground in Jharkhand (Ranchi) Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated International Day of yoga with around 40,000 volunteers.

He urged people to make yoga an integral part of life as" yoga is above  caste, colour, gender and religion It is above everything."

Maharashtra's chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Baba Ramdev encouraged thousands of followers at Nanded today morning in a yoga session.

Yoga day was celebrated across the globe. We Indians kept our heritage alive by celebrating this day in schools, colleges, government offices and private institutes.
